Vacillator is an achievement in the Steam version of the Amnesia: Justine expansion, and in the Xbox and Playstation versions as part of the Amnesia: Collection. In the Playstation version, it exists as a silver Trophy. Vacillator is a missable campaign achievement, gained by performing unusual actions that result in a particular ending state (in this case, some prisoners surviving and some dying).

Overview[]

Vacillator is achieved by both failing to save at least one of the three hostages and successfully saving at least one of the three hostages throughout the Cabinet of Perturbation. Since there are three hostages, and two different ways to meet this requirement (two survive and one dies, OR one survives and two die), it is a relatively easy ending achievement to get, even though the requirements to save prisoners increase in challenge throughout the Cabinet of Perturbation.[a]

Appearance[]

The achievement icon depicts Justine Florbelle in shadows, with cool, dim overhead light shining through bars on a window or grate, illuminating her worried expression. It expresses a neutral, ambiguous, and potentially "trapped" feeling on the part of a Justine who is so unsure of herself (representing her choices in-game which are neither especially merciful, nor especially merciless).

Trivia[]

  • A "Vacillator" is one who fails to make a strong or decisive decision or action, through weakness or uncertainty. It comes from a metaphorical description of people as "wavering," since to "vacillate" in its literal sense means "to sway," "to waver," "to swing back and forth."[1] The word is derived from Latin "vacillātum," with the same literal meaning.[2]

Footnotes[]

  1. In fact, there are six (6) combinations of prisoner outcomes that will result in this achievement, whereas both opposing achievements (Egotist and Altruist) require exactly one (1) combination of outcomes each.
