The Tin Hinan Tomb was an ancient burial complex, both crypt and temple, where two Orbs resided, in the sandy Algerian desert. Its location was hinted at Daniel's diary, unearthed by Herbert's expedition, and later visited by Tasi Trianon.[1] It is featured as part of a level in Amnesia: The Dark Descent and multiple levels in Amnesia: Rebirth.

Information[]

Historical basis[]

The tomb of Tin Hinan is based closely on its actual counterpart which is located in the Hoggar Mountains near Abalessa, Algeria.[2] The French explorer Henri Lhote argued that the Tin Hinan sepulcher is different from the surrounding tombs in southern Algeria, and is more typical of the architecture used by the Roman legionaries to create their fortifications in desert areas.[2] He believed that the tomb was therefore likely built on top of an earlier Roman castrum, which was originally erected around 19 BC, when consul Lucius Cornelius Balbus conquered the Garamantian territories and sent a small expeditionary force to reach the Niger river.[2] This hypothesis is rejected by most scholars today.[2]

This ancient tomb apparently rested in the deserts of Algeria. While initially dated to the 4th century, at the time of its excavation, it was revealed that the ruins were much older, according to Daniel in his 17th May diary entry. The tomb was presumably built by the ancient settlers as a monument of sorts to Tin Hinan, also known as "The Mother of Us All."

Most of the interior of the tomb was inaccessible, as it had crumbled into piles of ruins. It has humanoid statues in praying position, their gaze fixed at the dark domed ceiling, which may represent the followers of Mithraism. At the end of the hallway lies a room protected by a massive stone slab.

The interior of the tomb is never fully revealed, but the area of the burial chamber is seen in a flashback that Daniel has when he finally reads all 3 notes found in the Archives level.

Amnesia: Rebirth[]

The tomb was revisited in Amnesia: Rebirth. On March 4th, 1937, when the survivors of the crash of the plane Cassandra made their way through the desert, and several of them, able-bodied enough to search for help, were invited by a ghostly apparition to the Other World.[3] Those who entered found a shrine, and were led by the apparition to a traveller's amulet and, with it, into a transdimensional rift.[3]

Of the party who went for help, only the survivors Richard Fairchild and Alexander Sterling declined to follow on.[3][4][5] Meanwhile Tasi Trianon, Leon de Vries, Yasmin Chabani, Malick Tamboura, and Dr. Anton Metzier followed through the rift, bringing along the mortally wounded Hank Mitchell.[6][7] Tasi and the others drank the healing waters of a fountain in the Other World, at the invitation of Tin Hinan herself. The water rapidly restored the health of Hank, and the six of them departed the Other World without much incident.

Later, during the events of Rebirth, Tasi Trianon returned from the crash site to the tomb, suffering from amnesia and retracing her steps. She used the traveller's amulet to navigate nearby rifts to pass back and forth between Earth and the Other World, until

Trivia[]

  • In Daniel's flashback, there is only one Orb shown for him to interact. However, Herbert's journal reveals that the tomb has two Orbs, meaning that there may actually be two separate Orb chambers.
  • In Amnesia: Rebirth, at least 50 mummies (Tin Hinan among them) and at least 46 skulls can be found here.[citation needed]
