- This article is about the enemy. For the area with the same name, see Tesla (Location).
The Tesla is an enemy encountered in Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs. It was a monstrous pig-man, created by Oswald Mandus and the Engineer.
Another version of this enemy is encountered earlier in the game and is known as a Failed Experiment.[1]
Information[]
Encounters[]
Teslas appear in the following locations:
- Orgone Distribution Tanks (in a large room where the player becomes trapped)
- Electrogravitic Suppression - South Tower (In a maze-like glass corridor; where the player must traverse and escape it.)
It seems these are the only areas in which the creature is able to survive, due to the cold temperature, as evidenced by a document found earlier in the game.
Behavior[]
Its behavior is extremely erratic and unpredictable. It attacks anything and anyone — even other Manpigs and Mandus before his fevered amnesia. As it was heard killing a Wretch in Tesla 1.
Strategy[]
The phasing makes the Tesla difficult to track, as it will disappear and reappear continuously. It is the greatest threat in the game and is able to kill Mandus in two hits.
Description[]
Physical appearance[]
The Tesla is a monstrously large, mutated Manpig that can move both quadrupedally and bipedally. It also has many glowing electrical devices all over its body, making it easy to locate in dark areas. One such device is in its mouth, giving it the appearance of a suckling pig.
Personality[]
The Tesla is considerably more aggressive than the Wretches, showing greater tenacity in chasing down Mandus. This might be due to their regular phasing in and out of reality, similar to their less-stable predecessors.[2]
Intelligence[]
The Tesla is highly intelligent; and is the most intelligent out of the rest of the Manpigs and its earlier versions. It always seems to know where Mandus is hiding—no matter the chosen spot [of hiding].
Origins[]
The Tesla was a mutated Manpig that has been subjected to so much Compound X that it has become uncoupled from reality, causing it to flicker in and out of existence.[3]
Their ability to shift between realities, or at least the devices that allow them to shift, was dependent on temperature.[3] The hotter it is, the more unstable they become (caused by vitae inside their cells, which shatters if not properly cooled).[3] The cooling system is therefore necessary to keep them under control, both physically (since the unstable Failed Experiments that preceded them continually phase in-and-out of reality too much to be sufficiently present in Mandus's dimension to be useful) and mentally (they were "violent" and "unpredictable" even before Mandus lost control of all the other variants of Manpig).[3][2]
Thus they were limited to patrolling only parts of the Machine which have great amounts of coolant, the ambient temperature of which would be already quite cold as a result.[3] This included the facilities around the Electrogravitic Suppression Towers. Even so, the Tesla was considerably stronger and also less predictable than the other Manpigs, thanks to the dimensional phasing, and naturally the Engineer trusted the guarding of the Machine's heat-exchange system to them.
Trivia[]
- It is stated that the Tesla phases between our world and the other placeAlexander's home dimension or some other is unknown. —whether this is
- As the Tesla's body emanates electricity, it is likely that its name is inspired by the famous pioneer of electrical engineering Nikola Tesla.
- One of the files found in Tesla's in-game data was named "Tesla_mindf***_loop" which plays (for only a short time) after a Tesla pig spawns in an area. This is most likely a joke made by The Chinese Room.

For a few seconds they are creatures of this world, then they are torn away and cease to have physical form. This vicious ripping back and forth between worlds has driven them quite insane."

We cannot simply pack them about with coolant as we do at the center where the doorway is. The later versions are kept safe by the freezing temperature of those towers. Up here, where the air is hot and fetid, they become overheated, and their duality tears them asunder, as the other place flies from their cells and their vitae splinters."
