While rich in legend and hearsay, my knowledge is lack for the insight I crave."
The star-shaped soapstone was a mysterious symbolic artifact, apparently used by worshippers of the Cult of Mithras to identify mithraeums at which to worship. Johann Weyer entered the Orb Chamber underneath a church in the French city of Calais, which was signified by a star-shaped soapstone. This same soapstone was taken out of the wall by a present French soldier, named Sokal, who survived the ill-fated encounter.[1] Hundreds of years later, in the North African city of Algiers, the same soapstone was passed to Professor Thurston Herbert, via a chance encounter with Sokal's descendant, Captain Ambroise. Herbert used the artifact to finally navigate to his ultimate destination, the Tomb of Tin Hinan, where he hoped to find (and ultimately did find) an orb.
The properties of the object are unknown, except for its shape (star-shaped) and its apparent composition (soapstone). It is claimed to be cursed by Captain Ambroise, due to its alleged malignant effects on whoever carries it, but otherwise the soapstone seems to have no esoteric properties at all.
