The oil barrel is a device in Amnesia: The Dark Descent. Oil barrels are large, cylindrical containers and are found occasionally throughout Castle Brennenburg. They are used to provide a few, discrete opportunities to fully refill a player's lantern with oil.

Summary

There are a total of seven (7) of these large oil barrels that can be found in Amnesia: The Dark Descent, each in a different level. They are usually hidden in a corner of a room somewhere and will restore a varying amount, depending on how much oil Daniel currently has. The less oil Daniel has in his inventory, the more a barrel will fill his lantern. The amount of oil currently in the lantern and the number of oil potions are both taken into account.

Oil barrels can restore anywhere from 10-100% of the lantern's capacity. When the barrel is looked at or interacted with, it will use the player's current total amount of oil reserves to determine how much oil to give. If the total oil is less than 100 (four oil potions worth), it will fill the lantern with as much oil as possible to raise the total oil to 100. If it is already at least 100, it will give the minimum 10%. Therefore, if the player has at least two oil potions and their lantern is at least half full (or one oil potion and the lantern is at least 75% full), only 10% oil will be given. Conversely, it will only completely fill the lantern if the lantern is empty and the player does not have any oil potions.

The text shown when looking at a barrel may say that it will fill the lantern, but nevertheless may contain as little as 75% oil.

Hard mode

In Hard Mode, while the number of oil canisters in the game has been reduced from 37 to 22, all of the oil barrels are still present. However, every one of them refills the lantern with only 10% oil, regardless of the player's current total oil.
