Keys are a group of puzzle items in the Amnesia: The Dark Descent. Their function is to strictly enable progression through levels by unlocking their corresponding doors. There are three keys encountered in the The Dark Descent and four unreleased keys cut from the game during development.

Description[]

Each key is a required puzzle item in Amnesia: The Dark Descent.

Wine Cellar Key[]

Machine Room Key[]

Machine room key

Tag reads "Machine Room".

The Machine Room Key is a key item found in the Guest Room. It is necessary to gain entrance to the Machine Room. The Machine Room Key shares the same model and inventory icon as the Wine Cellar Key.

Rusty Key[]

Key rusty

An unmarked key.

The Rusty Key is a key item found in the Cells post-abduction. It is necessary to unlock the gate in order to escape the cell in which the player is trapped. The Rusty Key has a unique model and inventory icon.

Unreleased keys[]

These keys were cut from Amnesia: The Dark Descent for unknown reasons. From their filenames, they were apparently intended for use in gaining access to levels which are not present—or are present, but not locked off—in the final version.

Trivia[]

  • The Machine Room Key was formerly named "Study Room Key" (as shown in the early level creation timelapse video) and uses an internal name of "KeyStudy", suggesting that the key found in the Guest Room originally unlocked the Study.
  • Technically, the Wine Cellar Key is the same entity type as the Machine Room Key, just with a different name and description. This is because initially, the Wine Cellar (which included the Laboratory) was not locked.
    • The key was added later on after the Entrance Hall progression was redesigned and the Archives was split up. The spiderweb was turned into a flesh web and moved to the Entrance Hall and the Lantern was moved to the newly separated Old Archives, leaving the remaining central section of the Archives in need of a new objective.
  • The Rusty Key can also be obtained using the Iron Bar, making the Wooden Bucket (thus also the Bucket of Water) a useless item, and one which can be kept in your inventory until the end of the game.
