"My name is... Is... I am... Justine's test subject!"
The title of this article is conjecture. Although the subject of this article is canon, no official name for it has been given.

The Test Subject,[citation needed] serves as the protagonist for the expansion Amnesia: Justine. Unlike with Daniel, no flashbacks detailing her background are encountered, leaving her past life a mystery for the majority of the game.

Apparently, she was kidnapped by Justine Florbelle and brought to the Cabinet of Perturbation to partake in Justine's sadistic experimental studies of the human psyche, before being given a drug causing total amnesia. However, the expansion's ending reveals that this is not exactly the case because it turns out that the Test Subject is Justine herself, who had voluntarily gave herself temporary amnesia in order to test the limits of her own depravity. Thus, the player character and Justine are really the same person, even though the player is only supposed to realise that at the very end.

Information[]

Gameplay[]

Gameplay-wise, the Test Subject is a controllable first-person player character, identical to Daniel in almost all regards, except for having a different set of vocal "grunts," which reflect her belonging to a female gender. She is being incapable of using the lantern, which means that—unlike Daniel, whose left hand is visible holding the lantern when it is lit—not a single part of the Test Subject's body is visible to the player. As a consequence, the Test Subject has no character model.

Another difference from Daniel is that any of the Suitors can kill the Test Subject in one hit, while only a few enemies could have done so to Daniel (most notably, the Servant Brute). It is unclear if this is due to the Test Subject being physically weaker than Daniel or due to the Suitors somehow being stronger than Grunts and Kaernks.

History[]

Trivia[]

  • It is possible that the character of Clarice, introduced though notes around the middle of the story, is, in part, intended to serve as a "red herring", making the players suspect if she could have been the Test Subject's true past identity, distracting them from the possibility of it being Justine herself.
  • The Test Subject shares some similarities with Chell, the protagonist of the two Portal games, with both of them being mute women forced to navigate a series of deadly puzzles by a female villain who appears in the game only as a voice. This similarity is almost certainly intentional, due to Amnesia: Justine being released as part of Valve's Potato Sack ARG, meant to promote Portal 2.[citation needed]
