Arrival at the Inn[]

[Jacob walks over to the well, where Tinker is perched.]
Jacob
“Hi there, Tinker, found any mice lately?”
[Tinker does not react. Jacob pets the cat.]
[Jacob hears the noise of a carriage approaching.]
Jacob
(excitedly)
“Someone’s coming!”
Jacob passes the time in boredom, until the approaching carriage heralds new business at the inn.
Jacob
“Gabriel, is it really you?”
Gabriel the Outrider
“Good to see you again, Jacob.”
Jacob
“I was beginning to think you’d never return. It’s been well over a year.”
[The Innkeeper greets the new arrivals. Jacob makes like he is busy.]
Innkeeper
“Come inside and have something to drink and eat.”
“You too, Gabriel.”

After supper[]

[Jacob sits down at the end of the day, exhausted.]
[Tinker passes by.]
Jacob
“Hey, Tinker, come here – come here Tinker.”
[Tinker looks at Jacob, then keeps passing.]
Jacob
“You’re no fun.”
Gabriel
“What are you still doing up?”
Jacob
“The horses – they take time.”
Gabriel
“Here.”
[Gabriel hands Jacob an apple.]
Jacob
“Thank you. You know, we don’t get this kind of apple around here. The only ones we have are tough and sour.”
Gabriel
“You should plant the seeds after you’ve eaten it then.”
[Jacob smiles and pockets the apple.]
Jacob
“Maybe I will.”

Beastly encounter[]

Tinker
[yowls and hisses]
Jacob
“Tinker?”
Gabriel
“Damn cats.”
Jacob
“Hey! You there, what are you doing?”
[A dark figure shoves the cat into a sack.]
Jacob
“Let him go!”
[The figure knocks Jacob down unconscious.]

Speaking with Elise[]

Elise
“What are you doing?”
Jacob
“I’m planting an apple tree next to mother. It’s going to rain soon, you know? Best time to sow – before rain.”
“I’m sorry about your brother.”
Elise
“Thank you.”
Jacob
“I don’t remember much about my mother, but I know she loved apples.”
Elise
“Do you ever think of running away from your family?”
Jacob
“I don’t have much to run from anymore.”
Elise
“I mean, this life, your master, the Innkeeper.”
Jacob
“I’ll go with you, if you want.”
[Elise giggles.]
Elise
(blushing)
“I know you would. You are my best friend.”
Jacob
“Why won’t it rain?”
Elise
“Maybe God doesn’t see anything worth crying about.”
Jacob
“Elise! Come over here this instant!”
Gustaf Zimmermann
“Elise! Come over here this instant!”
Elise
“I have to go, Jacob.”
Jacob
“Elise, you won’t leave without saying good bye, will you?”
[Elise smiles.]
Elise
“I won’t – I promise.”
