At the Funeral[]

“Why couldn’t it been one of the girls?”

Gustaf, to his wife.

Gustaf
“Elise! Come over here this instant!”
Elise
“I have to go, Jacob.”
Jacob
“Elise, you won’t leave without saying good bye, will you?”
[Elise smiles.]
Elise
“I won’t – I promise.”

At Home[]

[Gustaf overturns the kitchen table.]
Gustaf
“Are we really going to eat? On a day like this?! Show some damn respect, Agathe!”
[Gustaf shakes and shoves Agathe down.]
Gustaf
“You make me sick, all of you!”
[Everyone else stays silent and still. Gustaf leaves.]
[Margarethe helps Agathe up.]
Margarethe
“Mother, I have thought about it, I will marry Immanuel after all. I think it would help out with the money.”
[Agathe kisses Margarethe's forehead.]
Agathe
“I knew you would come to your senses, you are a good girl. Something I wish all my girls would be.”
[Agathe eyes Elise.]

Running Away[]

Elise
(thinking)
This is it. Hurry!
[Elise grabs provisions and leaves the house.]
Gustaf
“Where do you think you are going!”
[Elise begins running.]
[Gustaf flings Elise to the ground, holding an axe.]
Gustaf
(maniacally)
“What are you doing Elise? Are you running away? Are we not good enough for you anymore?”
“I get it now. You killed him. Your work is done.”
[Elise tries to get up. Gustaf kicks her down.]
Gustaf
“I knew it. You are not my daughter. You are an Erkling – a Changeling. You had us all fooled, didn’t you?”
[Rain begins to fall heavily.]
[Gustaf steps on Elise's throat.]
Elise
(breathless)
“Please, dad...”
Gustaf
“I will purge your wicked soul from this body.”
[Gustaf raises his axe and looks at his daughter.]
Gustaf
(thinking)
What am I doing?
[Gustaf lets her go. Elise gets up and runs away again.]
Gustaf
“I’m sorry, I lost my head!”
[Elise runs until she can't. She looks back to see her father stopped further back.]
[Elise turns to see a carriage coming down the road towards them.]
Elise
(thinking, hopeful)
Someone is coming – someone is coming to help me. I just know it.
