France (French: France) is a country in western Europe, stretching from the English channel in the north to the Mediterranean in the south, and from the Alps in the east to the Atlantic sea in the west. Its capital and largest city is Paris. The country's northern region is the major setting of Amnesia: Justine, as well as of one short story in the collection Remember. France is the native country of three player characters: Justine Florbelle from Amnesia: Justine; Tasi Trianon from Amnesia: Rebirth; and Henri Clément from Amnesia: The Bunker.

Information[]

Historically, France existed as the Kingdom of France during the Medieval Period and part of the Modern Period of history.[3] However, in several periods of political upheaval and civil war following the first French Revolution, ca. 1792 CE, it has also been styled the French Empire and the French Republic, denoting the various rulers who've taken power and forms of government through which they ruled.[9][10]

During Remember - "With the Blessing of a King"[]

The story "With the Blessing of a King" begins right after the French recapture Calais from England. Johann Weyer gained permission to enter the city from Henry II, the King of France.

During Amnesia: Justine[]

Assuming the game takes place during 1858-1859, Amnesia: Justine takes place in the Second French Empire during the reign of Emperor Napoleon III, and writings suggest that the Florbelle Estate, the setting of the game, is located somewhere near Paris or Calais.[citation needed]

Justine herself was born between 1827 and 1828 into French aristocracy, during the Bourbon Restoration in France. Depending on their ages, Aloïs Racine appears to have been born either during the July Monarchy under Louis Phillipe I or during the previously mentioned Bourbon Restoration, and the other suitors were likely born during the time of the Bourbon Restoration/July Monarchy.

During Amnesia: The Bunker[]

The game begins in 1916, in the middle of World War 1 in France. Provided the player does not skip the intro, the trenches and No Man's Land are both visible during a brutal assault from the German Army.

Given that the main protagonist, Henri Clément, as well as his fellow soldiers are part of the French Army, were obviously born in France. Unlike most of the other protagonists of the Amnesia series, Henri's date and location of birth are both unknown. After the events of the intro, the game's events largely take place in a French bunker.

During Amnesia: Rebirth[]

France is mostly mentioned in the notes/diaries. If Tasi Trianon survives the game and travels through the relevant portal, she will return to Paris (whether with or without her second daughter). Thus, allowing the player to briefly see Paris.
