Dialogue[]

Old Friends[]

This section contains Faraj dialogue present in "Old Friends", from the Remember short story collection.

Meeting with Herbert[]

Thurston Herbert
“Faraj.”
Faraj
“Herbert!”
[Faraj and Herbert hug.]
Faraj
“So many years, my friend, so many years.”
Thurston Herbert
“I’m so happy to see you again. But this is not the place for pleasantries. Do you have somewhere we can go?”
Faraj
“Of course, follow me.”

In the Alleys[]

[Herbert checks his pocketwatch.]
Herbert
“I made good time.”
Faraj
[laughs] “Oh, really did you?”
Herbert
“Yes, look, not even six o’clock.”
[Faraj repairs and resets Herbert's pocketwatch, which had malfunctioned.]
Faraj
“There you go, my friend.”
Herbert
“Oh.”
“I’m sorry.”
Faraj
“Don’t worry. Did you have trouble finding the mosque?”
Herbert
“It was a splendid idea to find each other by looking for the minaret tower. But the streets are so unpredictable. As soon as I thought I had arrived, the street would go off in a different direction. It took me quite some time to find a way leading all the way to the mosque.”
Faraj
“Sounds a lot like the Casbah.”
[laughs]
Faraj
(determined)
“Do you need anything? I have a cousin selling the finest carpets in Algiers. Or maybe a new watch?”
Herbert
“Hah! Thank you, but I’m trying to plan a trip to the desert.”
Faraj
“Are you going, Herbert, are you really?”
Herbert
“Signed and paid for by the British Museum.”
[Faraj laughs triumphantly.]
Faraj
“You crazy infidel. How do you do it?”
Herbert
“I told them I had a map,”
Faraj
“We shouldn’t be talking about this in the streets. Come – this way.”

Tea and Pleasantries[]

Herbert
(jokingly)
“I’m glad my troubles entertain you. Posture is important, you know?”
Faraj
(worriedly)
“You need more pillows?”
Herbert
(thinking)
“Thank you, I will be all right.”
Faraj
“Lokum?”
[Faraj offers Herbert a plate of sweets.]
Herbert
“Delights! Don’t mind if I do.”
Faraj
“I forget, you are British. Turkish Delights, am I right?”
Herbert
“Yes, that’s what we call them.”
Faraj
“Careful with the rose flavored ones, they are said to ease your mind, but also make you forget things.”
Herbert
“I’m old – my memory is already abandoning ship.”
Faraj
“Herbert, do you really think you will be able to pull this off?”
Herbert
“The expedition? Most certainly.”
Faraj
“What have you told your people in London?”
Herbert
“The truth. That we are going to find the legendary tomb of Tin Hinan.”
Faraj
“Herbert, I told you. It is bigger than that.”
Herbert
“Faraj, don’t worry. I remember what you told me about Johann Weyer and his research. I know you think it is important.”
Faraj
“You realize what this means? They could all be travelers. Even God could be a concept from the beyond, brought to us by missionaries, like it was brought to the natives in the Americas. Maybe they are speaking to him, like an ordinary man. Wouldn’t you like to speak to – no with, the almighty!”
[Herbert pauses silently.]
Herbert
“Well, I guess we’ll find out.”
[Faraj calms himself, embarassed.]
Faraj
Herbert never got riled up.
[Faraj takes out and displays the map, overlain with copious notes.]
Herbert
“Where is all this information from?”
Faraj
“From here and there, but...”
[Faraj turns the map over, showing even more notes.]
Faraj
“... these are all from Weyer.”
Herbert
“What is this?”
[Herbert points at a star-shaped symbol on the map.]
Faraj
“Weyer describes it as a marker.”
Herbert
“For what?”
Faraj
“Who knows?”
[Faraj pointed at a circle-and-hand symbol.]
Faraj
“Now, this. This is the key.”

Rebels Arrive[]

[Baki and three more rebels rush into Faraj's house.]
Baki
“Uncle, you must run, they are killing everyone!”
[Baki notices Herbert.]
Baki
“Uncle, what are you doing? He is one of them!”
Faraj
“No, Baki. He is not like them. He is English.”
Baki
“He is European!”
Rebel
“Baki, they are coming. We must go!”
[Baki pulls out a knife and pushes past to Herbert.]
Faraj
“Don’t hurt him, please,”

Street Standoff[]

[The soldiers wait with weapons ready. The rebels exit the building and hold Herbert hostage at knifepoint.]
Baki
“Put your weapons away, or we kill this man!”
Faraj
“Please, don’t!”
Captain Ambroise
“Ready! Aim!...”
[The rebels panic. Faraj steps between the groups.]
Faraj
“Stop this madness!”
[Ambroise gives the signal.]
Captain Ambroise
“Fire!”

Last Words[]

[Faraj collapses, losing feeling and unable to move.]
Herbert
“Faraj, can you hear me?”
Faraj
“Yes, Herbert, I hear you, my friend. Are you all right?”
[Herbert holds Faraj's hand.]
Faraj
“Herbert, you are... unhurt.”
“Saved by the color of your skin.”
[Herbert ashamedly looks down.]
Herbert
“Farewell, Faraj, my friend.”
[Faraj exhales and dies. Herbert closes his eyelids.]
