Patrolling the docks[]

[The French patrol through the busy Algiers harbor.]
[Captain Ambroise considers the unusual amount of unmarked crates suspicious.]
Cpt. Ambroise
“You there!”
“What are you moving?”
Dock Loader
“I don’t know, it’s not mine.”
Cpt. Ambroise
“I need to see the custom’s slip for these items immediately.”
[The dockworkers don't listen and continue unloading the crates, while Ambroise watches them.]
Abd-al-Qadir Bahij
(calmly)
“Is there a problem, captain?”
[Ambroise faces him.]
Cpt. Ambroise
“Perhaps. Are these yours?”
Abd-al-Qadir Bahij
“Yes, yes they are.”
[Bahij signals his workers to begin transferring the crates.]
Cpt. Ambroise
“Nobody touches the crates, until I get some answers around here!”
Abd-al-Qadir Bahij
“My name is Abd-al-Qadir Bahij and here is my papers – identification, customs and tariff slip.”
Cpt. Ambroise
“Open one.”
Abd-al-Qadir Bahij
“Captain, they have already been checked and accounted for by the customs. The customs controlled by your government.”
Cpt. Ambroise
“I don’t care. Open one.”
Abd-al-Qadir Bahij
“Captain, you are performing a criminal act by opening that crate. It is not your business.”
Cpt. Ambroise
“My business is the Casbah and what you are trying to smuggle into it!”
Abd-al-Qadir Bahij
“No need to get upset, Captain. It says so right on the customs slip – foodstuff!”
[The soldiers open up a long crate.]
French Soldier
“Captain?”
“It’s grain, sir.”
[Ambroise catches Bahij holding his breath.]
[Ambroise kicks over the crate, emptying the grain and exposing smuggled guns.]

Quenching the rebellion[]

[Ambroise orders his soldiers to fire at fleeing rebels, engaged in a bloody uprising.]
Cpt. Ambroise
“After them! Let’s quench this rebellion, once and for all!”
[Ambroise's patrol pushes up the streets.]

Street standoff[]

[The soldiers wait with weapons ready. The rebels exit the building and hold Herbert hostage at knifepoint.]
Baki
“Put your weapons away, or we kill this man!”
Faraj
“Please, don’t!”
Cpt. Ambroise
“Ready! Aim!...”
[The rebels panic. Faraj steps between the groups.]
Faraj
“Stop this madness!”
[Ambroise gives the signal.]
Cpt. Ambroise
“Fire!”

At the hotel[]

[Ambroise drops the map and star-shaped stone in front of Herbert.]
Herbert
“What is that?”
Cpt. Ambroise
“That is my question.”
“You are lucky there are so few Brits in Algeria, Professor.”
Herbert
“What do you want?”
Cpt. Ambroise
“I want to know what it is. And why is there a picture of this stone on the back of your map?”
Herbert
[says nothing]
Cpt. Ambroise
“I understand. You wouldn’t want to tell me. We are not exactly best friends. Know this, this stone has been in my family for something like three centuries, ever since the siege of Calais. It has fueled the men in my family with great spirit, but also madness. You know, inspiration to the point of obsession. I never really bought into the whole thing, but I must admit seeing you with this fills me with a sense of purpose and closure.”
Herbert
“Are you giving this to me?”
Cpt. Ambroise
“I’m not doing you a favor Englishman. This is for my father and my father’s father and so on. It is on you now. Good luck.”
