- Tar, also known as "pitch", is an organic chemical mixture and a very sticky substance, ranging in viscosity from thick, but runny to near-solid. It was used, among other things, for sealing roofs and ships against water infiltration. Asphalt is a very similar petrochemical substance. Tar is "destructively distilled" from carbon-containing substances, such as wood, coal, peat, and petroleum.
