Barricading is an elaborate method of hiding. It involves finding a room with a door opening outwards, and then blocking the entrance by, for instance, stockpiling crates and other objects in front of it so as to impede the enemy's advance. Depending on the door you are hiding behind, Grunts can destroy it in 7–10 seconds, while Brutes can destroy it in about 3–5 seconds.

When the player suspects that a Gatherer has entered the area, they may choose to either hide or follow these steps:

  1. Look for a room with ideally one door.
  2. Check to see if the door opens outwards.
  3. Enter room and close door behind you.
  4. Take note of the items in the room and choose which will be best for barricading the door.
  5. Place objects in front of the door.
  6. Find a place in the room to hide.

Methods of fortification[]

The most common way to fortify your position is to block the doorway with crates and barrels. As these are the most abundant "large" objects in the game, they are most frequently used—be aware, however, that barrels count as "breakable objects" in the game and will not stand continuous assault from a Gatherer. There are, however, other methods and objects with which to fortify the room you are in. Some types of furniture, like sofas and wardrobes, are immune to destruction by the game's physics or Gatherers and are therefore suitable objects to use when fortifying. Sofas can easily be jumped over if the player wishes to barricade a room and easily exit it without removing fortification. Note that Gatherers may still knock back these objects if the physics allow them to do so.

Amnesia: The Bunker[]

Barricading the holes from which the Stalker emerges has less effect in Amnesia: The Dark Descent than it does in the first game. However, this tactic can still be turned to use in a few ways.

Successfully blocking a hole from which the Stalker emerges and causing it to break the blockage grants the achievement Cut It Off.

Trivia[]

  • This is generally the most time-consuming method of avoiding enemies.
  • Sometimes if a Gatherer manages to destroy too many barrels at once they get glitched, being unable to react to anything. The player is able to pass the enemy without trouble, but staring at them will reduce sanity.
