Amnesia is a survival horror video game series created by Frictional Games. The series started its life as a video game (Amnesia: The Dark Descent) and was released in the beginning of the early 2010s, successfully receiving global attention for its frightening atmosphere and horror fuel, and winning several awards. The series' horror elements and themes are influenced by the works of H.P. Lovecraft.
The series currently consists of four main games (with one DLC for the first game), a PDF collection of five short stories, a compilation bundle of two previous games, two digital music albums, and a small amount of merchandise.
Main Series[]
Amnesia: The Dark Descent[]

The first installment was released on September 8, 2010. Set in 1839, the game follows the story of Daniel, a man who almost has no memory about himself or his past, as he explores around the darker areas of Brennenburg Castle while trying to maintain his sanity by surviving from monsters and avoid from witnessing unsettling events.
Justine expansion[]
A DLC expansion, Amnesia: Justine, was released on April 12, 2011.
Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs[]

The second installment was released on September 10, 2013. It is an indirect sequel to The Dark Descent and sets in London on 1899, featuring a new cast of characters in a different setting.
Amnesia: Rebirth[]

The third installment and was released on October 20, 2020. It is a second indirect sequel to The Dark Descent and sets in the place where Daniel and Herbert previously explored - Algeria, North Africa.
Amnesia: The Bunker[]

The fourth installment was released on June 6, 2023. Set in 1916, the game follows the story of French soldier Henri Clement in a bunker along the Western Front.

A compilation of two previous games, The Dark Descent (along with its Justine expansion) and A Machine for Pigs, is first released on November 22, 2016 for the PlayStation 4 port.
It was later released for Xbox One on September 28, 2018, and released for Nintendo Switch on September 12, 2019.PDF Stories[]

A collection of five short stories, written by Mikael Hedberg with illustrations done by Rasmus Gunnarsson and Jonas Steinick, are released as a PDF file for version 1.2 of The Dark Descent.
In Other Games[]
Here follows a list of cameos, references, and Easter eggs in other games outside of the Amnesia series:
- In Happy Wheels, in the "Haunted Mansion 3" level, there is a rose found in the cavern areas. This is a reference to The Dark Descent's cover art.
- In Spooky's Jump Scare Mansion, Specimen 13's behavior is in reference to the Kaernk from The Dark Descent.
Trivia[]
- It was first originally called Unknown, then Lux Tenebras, before the official final name was chosen during the production of The Dark Descent.
- Nationalities of the games protagonists are either British or French.
