AW:RULES

This page contains the ruleset which must be followed when it comes to editing or adding content to the Amnesia Wiki. Differently from wiki guidelines, disregarding any of these rules will result in disciplinary measures for the offending user. These may start off as a warning, and on repeated or severe enough offenses may include measures such as temporarily or permanently limiting the offending users ability to perform certain actions such as uploading images, or even editing.

Any offense should be reported to Amnesia Wiki staff, and the offending material should be deleted or reverted.

Please read the full Fandom Terms of Use before using the Amnesia Wiki, as this is only an excerpt from the full document.

These rules always take precedence, and are non-negotiable. Failure to abide by them will result in a permanent ban, and your IP-adress and account name along with an account on the infraction will be handed over to Fandom staff for deliberation.

Age

Shortcut:
AW:AGE

The Fandom Terms of Use restricts access to Fandom services for people under the age of 16 in the European Economic Area and California, and for people under the age of 13 in the rest of the world.

Due to the graphic nature of the content within the Amnesia games, the Amnesia Wiki further requires any editor to be of the age of 18 or older, or have the consent of a parent or legal guardian to view and change the content of this site. The Amnesia games, being horror games, may deal with graphic topics such as sex; nudity; death; blood; abuse; torture; animal cruelty; rape; the supernatural; and body horror. The Amnesia Wiki, aiming to be a comprehensive resource on the world and development of this game series, WILL contain uncensored explicit text and computer-generated 3D imagery, which deal with said topics.

Breaking this rule will result in a ban until the individual in question is 18 years of age.

NSFW Content

Shortcut:
AW:NSFW

Any non-pornographic explicit or NSFW (Not Safe For Work) imagery or text is allowed, as long as the content:

  • Is only fictional in nature (no real photography or films), and;
  • Fully complies with the Amnesia Wiki image policy, and;
  • Pertains to the games or the development of the games within the Amnesia series, or;
  • Is an in-game screenshot or video recording from one of the games in the Amnesia series, and;
  • Doesn't otherwise break the Fandom user conduct regarding pornography or offensive material.

This means that in-game documents or screenshots are allowed, even if they contain nudity or otherwise graphic material – as long as they are uploaded for other reasons than to display the graphic contents themselves. Anything not pertaining to the games will be swiftly removed.

If you spot NSFW content that break this rule, please remove the content and report the offending account or IP-address to an admins. Breaking the rules on explicit material will result in a warning or a ban up to a permanent ban, depending on the severity of the infraction.

Vandalism

Shortcut:
AW:VANDALISM

Vandalism is editing in ways deliberately intended to obstruct or defeat the purported purpose of the wiki. The Amnesia Wiki maintains a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to vandalisation.

Vandalisation includes:
  • Deliberately inserting false information onto pages
  • Removing all content from a page ('blanking')
  • Reverting constructive edits
  • Inserting nonsense or gibberish onto pages
  • Inserting content on pages which can be described as obscene, pornographic, abusive, offensive, profane, illegal, racist, homophobic, transphobic, or otherwise isn't deemed acceptable under the rule on acceptable NSFW content
  • Inserting racial, homophobic, transphobic, sexist, or religiously intolerant slurs onto pages in deliberate attempts to 'troll'
  • Spamming external links or advertising on pages
  • Creating empty, or one-sentence, pages
  • Replacing all content on a page with nonsense, gibberish, advertising, or offense content
  • Adding templates such as the {{delete}} template on pages in deliberate attempts to cause damage
Vandalisation does not include:
  • General insertion or removal of material
  • Slanted or biased edits
  • Edits not complying with the Manual of Style
  • Reverting unconstructive edits
  • Reverting your own edits (especially on your own talk page)

If you see vandalism being done to a page, please remove the offending material, and report the offending account or IP-address to an admin.

Breaking the rules on vandalism will result in a warning or a ban up to a permanent ban, depending on the severity of the infraction.

Edit warring

Shortcut:
AW:WAR

An edit war occurs when editors who disagree about the content of a page repeatedly override each other's contributions. Since this type of behaviour is unconstructive and leads to animosity, editors should always seek to reach a resolution through looking towards consensus view on the subject, or through reasonable discussion.

Edit warring is not:
  • Reverting vandalism
  • Reverting to enforce other, overriding policies (such as NSFW content)
  • Reverting edits of banned or blocked users
  • Reverting edits on one's own user page

To avoid edit warring, all editors should follow the three-revert rule, which states that any editor may not perform more than three edits on a single page – whether the material involved is the same or different – within a 24-hour period. In a nutshell, always use common sense and discuss the matter with the other editor(s) in the comments, or in the talk page of the subject page or their user page(s).

If you encounter edit warring, please forward the issue to an admin.

Breaking the three-revert rule or the rules on edit warring will result in a 24-hour ban.

Style

Shortcut:
AW:STYLE

The Amnesia Wiki has a style guideline known as the Manual of Style, which is ideally to be followed to maintain a consistent style in editing and formatting across the wiki.

However, the Manual of Style is a guideline rather than a policy, and therefore will not be enforced with disciplinary measures. Rather, encountering a page that doesn't comply with the manual should be edited to fall in line with it better. Furthermore, if a user disagrees with any part of the manual, they can bring it up on the talk page at Amnesia Wiki talk:Manual of Style.

If a user encounters a page that doesn't comply with the Manual of Style, they should either edit it to better comply with it, or add the {{cleanup|reason}} notice to the top of the page immediately following the infobox, where <reason> should be replaced with a Shortcut to the section(s) of the manual that is being breached on the article.

Speculation

Shortcut:
AW:SPECULATION

The purpose of the Amnesia Wiki is to document the development and the world of the Amnesia games from an academic and in-universe pespective, and as such, any speculation should be kept to the comment sections or user talk pages.

Exceptions to this rule includes when a connection is highly suggested and bears mentioning, but in such cases, the connection should not be presented as definitive. Our jobs as editors isn't to inform the readers on how the games should be interpreted, but rather to assist people in forming their own interpretations of the games by describing them as accurately as possible, without making any hastily assumptions based on personal bias or favourite fan-theories or headcanons. In other words, encyclopaedic writing should always aim to be descriptive rather than prescriptive.

Speculation by in-game characters or documents is, with proper attribution, okay to include on a page, but even then should usually not be presented as definitive. Again, the Amnesia Wiki's goals isn't to present certain head- or fan-canons onto its readers as being correct interpretations of the source material, but rather to assist in letting the readers form their own interpretations on the games and their world.

If you spot pages that contain speculation, please remove it from the page; or if possible when the material can be backed up using in-game documentation, incorporate it into the page in a smart(er) way and cite it properly.

Breaking the rule on speculation will result in a warning on the first and second offense, followed by a 24-hour ban on a third offense.

Image policy

Shortcut:
AW:IMG

In a nutshell, all images uploded to the wiki must be sourced properly, contain the correct license information, and serve a functional purpose.

Failure to abide by the image police will result in a warning on the first offense, followed by a 24-hour ban on the second offense, followed by a three-day ban on a third offense, followed by a one-month ban on a fourth offense, followed by a one-week ban on a fifth offense along with a lifetime ban on the uploading of media.

Naming

Images should be uploded under a proper name, that describes the contents of the image, rather than a random filename. E.g., they are not to be named something like File:986c987123978e7a78687c0923487395723.png, but something simple such as File:Ghoul_cutout.png is completely fine.

Image information

All uploaded images should include the {{information}} template on their file page, with the parameters filled out:

{{Information
|description=
|date=
|source=
|author=
|permission=
|other_versions=
|other_fields=
}}

Description

This should contain a short, one or two-sentence description of the image in question.

This field is required.

Date

This should contain the date the image was first uploaded.

This field is optional.

Sourcing

This should contain the source for the image. All uploaded images uploaded to the Amnesia Wiki must be sourced with the original source, rather than any website that the image may have been found on. This means that if you find an image of Alexander of Brennenburg on Google Image Search, the source should still be written down as Amnesia: The Dark Descent, and not Google images or similar.

This field is required.

Author

This should contain the name of the author(s) of the image. For screenshots or files from the games, this would simply be Frictional Games.

This field is required.

Permission

This should contain the appropriate license template for the uploaded image.

This field is required.

Other versions

If other versions of the image are already uploaded, they should be linked here.

This field is optional.

Other fields

Additional fields can be added here, for any further information you want to add.

Screenshots

Ideally, screenshots from the games meant to show off assets should not contain any HUD (Heads-up display) such as a reticle or journal icon, and the character should not be holding an item (such as a lantern, orb, or amulet).

Exceptions to this is, of course, if the HUD element or the item the character is holding is what the image is meant to display in the first place.

Fair use

Images uploaded without the consent of the owner should include the {{fairuse}} template in the "permission" field on their file page.

There are some stipulations to how this can be used, however:

  • It is a legal requirement that the image serve a function on the wiki – such as showing off how a character or location looks. It cannot be uploaded simply to be included within a gallery or similar.
  • It cannot be used in a degrading or demeaning fashion, outside of its informative purpose on the article page.
  • It must contain correct attribution, with a link or source to the author of the image.

'Fan-art' and derivative works

Shortcut:
AW:FANART

In most cases, fan art of characters and locations should not be included on mainspace articles.

Exceptions can be made for this, albeit rarely, if the following requirements are met:

  • It is a reproduction of a character/location/item etc. already established within the universe (e.g., fanart of characters such as Hazel is not allowed).
  • The image is of exceptional quality, fully coloured, and clearly and faithfully reproduces the character/location/item etc it is a fanwork of.
  • It is uploaded by the artist themself; or with the express, written permission of the author easily accessible by anyone in the file page.
  • It is placed on a page that doesn't already contain a high amount of images.
  • It is not placed in an infobox.
  • It doesn't try to pass itself off as official art in the file page or image caption.
  • It makes it clear in a caption on the page(s) it's included on that it is not official art.
  • It should ideally have been acknowleged by the developers or community handlers previously and positively responded to (on places such as Twitter or Discord).

An example of a piece of fan art that follows all of these rules is File:Professor23425.png.

Note that any piece of fan art uploaded may be deleted at any time and without warning, regardless if the uploader thinks they are following all of the rules properly.

Re-uploading fan art that has been deleted previously will result in a warning, and further infractions will be met with a 24-hour ban.

Real-world images

Images from the real world is permitted on some occassions:

  • To compare real-life subjects with their in-game versions (such as on the Agrippa page).
  • If it's an image of a real-world character mentioned in game, but no model or image of them exists within the game (such as on the Weyer page).

Personal images

A user is allowed to upload images for use outside of the main namespace (e.g., on user pages, blog posts, community posts, or similar). The purpose of th image is to be stated in their file page.

Personal images are never to be inserted into article pages. They must also also follow all rules when it comes to sourcing, licensing, and nsfw content.

Citing

Shortcuts:
AW:SOURCE
AW:CITE

Claims made about a subject should be sourced properly using the <ref> tag.

There are two types of references that can be applicable on pages: in-universe citations and out-of-universe citations. Not citing statements about an in-universe subject is only in violation of the Manual of Style, but not the rules. However, any claim made regarding anything outside of the Amnesia universe needs to be sourced properly – this includes, but is not limited to, statements about game development, game developers, game availability, and game reception.

References will be listed automatically by the use of the {{reflist}} template, which should be added at the bottom of a page under a heading titled "References".

A proper out-of-universe reference includes a link to the citation, the names of the authors of what you are citing, the site the material is hosted on, the date when the material was archived (if you are linking to an archive on Archive.org), and the date the citation was created.

An example of a proper citation of https://frictionalgames.com/2020-09-amnesia-is-now-open-source/:
<ref>[https://frictionalgames.com/2020-09-amnesia-is-now-open-source/ ''Amnesia is now open source!''] – Thomas Grip on https://frictionalgames.com/. Retrieved 2024-04-19.</ref>
This results in the following appearing in the reflist:

Failure to properly cite out-of-universe statements will result in a warning. Repeated offenses will result in further warnings, and on the fifth offense will result in a 24-hour ban.

Talk pages

Shortcuts:
AW:TALK
AW:COMMENTS

Conversation on the talk pages of an article is to be maintained to the article in question. The purpose of a talk page is bringing up issues, questions, or suggestions about the page; and not anything else.

Using the talk page for anything other than their intended purpose will result in a warning, and repeated offenses may result in a ban.

Comment section

More than just a traditional talk page, the comment sections of articles may be used for readers to talk about their favourite theories, their personal interpretations on the games' story, or post fan art or similar.

That being said, the purpose of the comment sections is not to simply 'goof around', post nonsense or gibberish, or other such. Conversations are to be maintained in English, and the topic is to be kept related to the subject in question.

Fighting and animosity towards other users or their opinions, identities, and views, is completely unnacceptable, and will result in an immediate 24-hour ban; with bans of increasing length on further infractions. The Fandom Terms of Use, as with any other place, must be followed in the comment section and on user pages, and as such, any of the following occurring in the comment section is a bannable offense:

  • Posting any material that is obscene, hateful, pornographic, abusive, offensive, profane, illegal, homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, or religiously intolerant
  • Posting copyrighted material
  • Impersonating other users or people
  • Attempting to obtain other users private information
  • Spamming or advertising
  • Attempting to solicit personal information from anyone under the age of 18

Achievements

Shortcut:
AW:ACHIEVEMENTS

The Amnesia Wiki supports the achievement system. The purpose of the achievement system is to encourage editors to contribute by giving prolific contributors awards in the forms of medals and points which they can display on their profiles.

However, abusing this system is against the rules and a bannable offense. An editor may, for instance, try to artificially increase their total number of edits by adding overused links, adding unecessary punctuation, or adding 'st' or 'th' to dates.

Abusing the achievement system includes:
  • Repeatedly editing the same page, adding or removing small details such as punctuation, and then saving the page
  • Posting similar or identical blog posts to get achievements
  • Adding and removing nonsense to pages to stack up your total number of edits
  • Adding and removing categories to stack up your total number of edits

Abusing the achievement system will result in a warning, and repeated offenses will result in a 24-hour ban.

Appealing a ban

If you think you've been banned unfairly, you can appeal your ban by contacting an Amnesia Wiki administrator – either by posting on their wall, or by sending them a direct message if they have their contact information listed.

In your appeal, please describe thoroughly the circumstances that lead to your ban, what administrator banned you, and why you think your ban was unfair. The administrators will make a decision within 24 hours on whether you should be unbanned, or remain banned.

Questions or concerns

Shortcut:
AW:QUESTIONS

These rules aren't final, and as all things on open online encyclopaedias, are based on community consensus. If you take issue with any one of these rules, feel like something should be added, or feel like something should be removed or changed, please bring up your concerns up on the talk page over at Amnesia Wiki talk:Rules.
